Revolutionizing Healthcare Navigation: How Digital Wayfinding Improves Patient Experience

Read: 2578

Digital wayfinding has emerged as a key tool that healthcare systems and hospitals are embracing to enhance the patient experience.

Long behind in adopting digital solutions med at boosting convenience, health providers have shifted their focus towards innovative tools designed specifically for patients. Among these is digital wayfinding - an application often deployed on mobile devices that helps guide both patients and visitors through complex medical facilities either to reach healthcare appointments or visit loved ones in need of care.

Mark Zhang, DO, the Medical Director at the Brigham Digital Innovation Hub, has shared insights into a navigation system implemented at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In December 2019, Dr. Zhang was interviewed by the Center for Connected Medicine CCM during their Top of Mind Summit to discuss how this digital tool is utilized.

Incorporating wayfinding to enhance patient experience at Brigham and Women's Hospital

To address the challenge of navigating complex medical facilities that could cause stress for patients already grappling with illness, Brigham and Women’s Hospital decided on a digital wayfinding solution. The team med not only to meet patients' expectations but also ensure operational efficiency.

Implementing such a system was quite challenging, Dr. Zhang remarked during his interview. However, we've seen significant support from leadership and staff towards this tool now that it's functional.

With the digital navigation app in place, Brigham is looking to expand its use by integrating with other digital services such as text alerts for scheduled procedures including directions to the care site.

By adding wayfinding information when scheduling preplanned medical procedures, we're enhancing the patient experience. This aligns well with our broader strategy of utilizing technology, Dr. Zhang sd.

Wayfinding applications are increasingly being explored by healthcare systems seeking to improve their patients' journey. Mercy Health in Cincinnati introduced an interactive in-hospital navigation app for Apple and Android devices, facilitating easier discovery of everything from clinics to parking lots mHealth Intelligence.

The utility exts beyond patient convenience as hospitals utilize these solutions to optimize internal operations as well. According to Becker's Hospital Review, radio transmitters and Bluetooth signals enable employees navigating complex campuses to find wheelchrs, gurneys, IV pumps, and other supplies more easily.

Dr. Zhang also serves as the Medical Director of the Brigham Digital Innovation Hub and Associate Program Director for the Clinical Informatics and Innovation Fellowship at Partners Healthcare, a Palliative Care consultant at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and a fellow in Harvard's Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship Brigham Digital Innovation Hub.

He is recognized for his expertise through initiatives such as creating the Palliative Care Fast Facts app for iOS and Android devices and co-founding Cake - a venture-backed company focused on advance care planning.
