The historical Forbidden City in Beijing, commonly known as the Palace Museum, is leveraging digital innovations to attract a global audience. Yu Zhuang, deputy head of the Palace Museum's digital information department, highlighted that the museum has been undergoing a digital transformation process over the past two decades. Currently, more than 700,000 cultural artifacts have been digitized, with thousands added annually as the collection expands.

Yu mentioned the effort to provide each tangible artifact with digital identification. Notably, efforts are underway to meticulously dismantle and reconstruct an antique clock using three-dimensional data collection techniques. If these measurements prove precise enough, future plans include reproducing this intricate timepiece through three-dimensional printing and other advanced technologies.
Embracing Virtual Reality:
In response to the global health situation posed by COVID-19, museums across China have intensified their digital initiatives to engage with audiences remotely. Yu Zhuang expressed confidence that international exhibitions could be conducted virtually using digitized objects in the future. As we look forward to another 600 years of existence, Yu stated, the Palace Museum will undoubtedly shine brighter than ever.
Exhibiting History on an International Stage:
To celebrate its 600th anniversary amidst the pandemic, the museum hosted several live-streamed guided tours, which attracted millions of viewers. The Hong Kong Palace Museum is scheduled to open in June 2022 and will feature around 800 pieces from Beijing's Forbidden City Museum, with approximately 160 classified as 'national treasures'.
