Revolutionizing Heritage: Tencent and the Forbidden City's Digital Transformation for Global Access

The Forbidden City, or Palace Museum as it is also known, has been a pinnacle of achievement throughout its history. It holds the title of being one of the world's largest palaces and the most visited museum in China. Drawing millions to Beijing annually, more than 19 million visitors passed through its gates before its brief hiatus due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

During this period of downtime for the UNESCO World Heritage site, Tencent and the Palace Museum seized an opportunity to revolutionize how people experience history by digitizing the vast collection and providing virtual access to its treasures while safeguarding both its cultural heritage and physical monument.

Culture Meets Technology: An Immersive Experience

A grand international forum was held in Shenzhen by the Palace Museum and Tencent, showcasing a fully immersive digital exhibition of the Forbidden City.

Walk through the venue as patterns from ancient buildings, ceramics, furniture, textiles, and more, captured in high-definition detl, decorate its walls. One highlight is the reproduction of Juanqinzh – an ornately decorated imperial retreat that epitomizes Imperial Chinese craftsmanship and interior design.

VR, AR technologies and other advanced tools were utilized to restore the intricate detls of this lavishly adorned space.

Furthermore, a set of grand-scale digital 3D images magnified up to 22 times was displayed on towering structures. This allowed audiences to observe patterns and designs in unprecedented detlmuch clearer than ever possible before.

The installation also incorporated cutting-edge surround sound technology to enhance the multi-sensory experience.

Digitalizing Heritage for New Generations

Tencent's partnership with the Palace Museum began in 2016, ming to preserve cultural heritage digitally while making it accessible to younger audiences.

Ahead of the palace’s 600th anniversary in 2020, a three-year collaboration was announced that expanded the digitalization efforts by integrating cloud and 5G technologies to fully bring these treasures to life.

Interactive online series like Glory of the Forbidden City featured behind-the-scenes insights on how the palace was constructed. Leveraging the speed of data processing and low latency capabilities offered by 5G technology, it created ultra-high-definition images and interactive viewing experiences for its audience.

Documentaries, films, TV shows told tales about the rulers, inhabitants, and workers who once called this grand palace home. Meanwhile, special games, cartoons, music, and a Weixin Mini Game highlighting artisans, costumes, and pntings were developed to attract younger audiences.

A panoply of educational content for all ages was launched on Tencent’s animation platform.

Behind-the-Scenes Digital Preservation

The collaboration also encompassed crucial behind-the-scenes work med at digitally preserving the Palace Museum's wealth of cultural heritage.

Tencent partnered with the museum's research tea utilizeand cloud services for digital collection, storage, and display of images from approximately 100,000 relics.

Tencent Cloud was leveraged to create an open platform ding in the management and modernization of the museum’s digital catalogues, enhancing search functions, intellectual property protection, and establishing standards for other museums and cultural industries.
