Factsheet on the Launch of a New Street-Level Navigation System in Central Area and Yishun by Land Transport Authority LTA
In an ongoing effort to improve accessibility and convenience for pedestrians and cyclists, the Land Transport Authority LTA is initiating a pilot project for a new street-level wayfinding system in Central Singapore and Yishun. This initiative simplify navigation by installing 35 signs across these two districts.
Since December 2020, LTA has conducted extensive surveys, workshops, focus group discussions, and roadshows with local residents, visitors, and key stakeholders to gather insights into their travel experiences. Based on feedback received during this process, LTA has integrated various improvements into the signage design and placement strategy for the pilot phase.
The new wayfinding system comprises three distinct types of signs - Kiosks, Totes, and Fingerposts – strategically placed in both areas to facilitate a comprehensive navigation network highlighting amenities like MRT stations, bus stops, cycling paths, major landmarks, etc. These signs will enable users to locate nearby destinations within the broader vicinity as well as immediate surroundings.
To ensure ease of use, each sign displays supplementary information on facilities such as building entrances, landmarks, MRT stations, bus stops, taxi stands, and cycling pathways alongside essential navigation icons like a You are here indicator and 3D landmarks for spatial orientation. Refer to the attached Annex for detled wayfinding information about these signs.
Post-launch evaluation will assess the success of this pilot project. If successful, LTA plans to integrate the system island-wide into its Frily Streets program and could potentially develop guidelines defining standards and best practices for street-level sign design and placement in the future.
