The Land Transport Authority LTA of Singapore is pioneering a revolutionary street-level wayfinding system in a move to significantly enhance the walking and cycling experience in urban centers, starting this month with pilot projects in Central Singapore and Yishun. This initiative underscores LTA's commitment to continuously elevating urban mobility options and fostering sustnable transportation.
The pilot program involves installing 35 signs at strategic locations med at simplifying navigation for pedestrians and cyclists. It is part of a broader strategy that complements existing navigation tools, such as mobile applications. User feedback will be gathered through surveys and interviews to refine the system based on residents', visitors', and stakeholders' experiences.
The development process leading up to this pilot began in December 2020 with extensive engagement activities including street surveys, workshops, focus group discussions, and roadshows. Insights garnered from these sessions have been incorporated into the signage design, focusing on enhancements to iconography, map scales, and color schemes.
The wayfinding system includes three types of signs: Kiosk, Totem, and Fingerpost, each tlored to provide information at various levels of proximity for different destinations. The Kiosk and totem signs display nearby locations, with the fingerpost sign offering reassurance that travelers are proceeding in the correct direction.
Notable features include a You are here indicator, 3D landmarks, and familiar wayfinding icons designed to facilitate navigation to key amenities like MRT stations, bus stops, cycling paths, major landmarks, building entrances, and public transport nodes. The fingerpost system confirms that users are on course to their destinations.
LTA plans to incorporate the successful aspects of the pilot into Island-wide Cycling Network guidelines in the future, supporting Singapore's broader initiatives for Frily Streets. This may pave the way for setting standards and best practices for street-level wayfinding signage design and placement across the city.
This innovative approach underscores Singapore's advancement in smart city development by combining technology with thoughtful urban planning to create accessible, efficient, and sustnable urban environments. The introduction of a cutting-edge wayfinding system exemplifies LTA's proactive stance on driving forward urban mobility solutions through the integration of digital technologies while considering user feedback for optimal outcomes.
Incorporating advanced wayfinding systems aligns with the digital economy by promoting user-centric solutions that enhance urban experiences, aligning Singapore's efforts to establish intelligent and interconnected urban spaces. The pilot program's focus on integrating sustnable transportation initiatives showcases the synergy between technology, urban development, and the digital age in advancing smart cities.
