Singapore Embarks on Innovative Wayfinding System Pilot to Enhance Urban Navigation for Pedestrians and Cyclists
In a strategic move med at enhancing convenience and accessibility of walking and cycling journeys in central areas, the Land Transport Authority LTA of Singapore is launching an innovative pilot street-level wayfinding system. This initiative, commencing this month, will feature 35 strategically placed signs to facilitate navigation for pedestrians and cyclists across the Central area and Yishun.
The pilot project complements existing navigation tools like mobile applications by introducing a comprehensive wayfinding system tlored to address urban mobility needs. The LTA gather user feedback through surveys and interviews to refine the wayfinding solutions further.
This initiative resulted from extensive engagement efforts spanning since December 2020, which involved street surveys, workshops, focus group discussions, and roadshows. These activities contributed valuable insights that were incorporated into the sign design process, focusing on improvements in iconography, map scales, and color schemes.
The wayfinding system is comprised of three distinct types of signs: Kiosk, Totem, and Fingerpost. Each sign serves a specific function to form an interconnected network guiding users towards key amenities like MRT stations, bus stops, cycling paths, major landmarks, and more.
Kiosk and totem signs provide information on nearby destinations, including facilities such as building entrances, landmarks, public transport nodes, and cycling paths.
Fingerpost signs serve as a confirmation marker that users are proceeding in the correct direction.
Innovative design features include familiar wayfinding icons like “You Are Here” indicators and 3D landmarks to d navigation. These features facilitate easy orientation towards nearby key destinations, landmarks, public transport nodes, and active mobility infrastructure such as bicycle parking and cycling paths.
As the pilot unfolds, LTA envisions integrating this system into the Island-wide Cycling Network, supporting Singapore's commitment to creating Frily Streets. Successful implementation may pave the way for establishing guidelines that set standards and best practices for street-level wayfinding signage design and placement.
This pioneering approach showcases how technology is being harnessed in smart city development, aligning urban mobility solutions with digital advancements. By integrating user-centric features like intuitive icons and interactive elements, Singapore shape a more accessible, efficient, and sustnable urban environment through the deployment of advanced wayfinding systems.
By launching this innovative pilot project for street-level wayfinding, LTA is demonstrating Singapore's proactive stance in advancing urban navigation infrastructure using cutting-edge technology and incorporating user feedback. This initiative not only fulfills immediate needs but also sets a precedent for future digital enhancements that support sustnable mobility and enhance the overall urban experience within the city.
