Office of Disability Support Services: A Guide to Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment at Seton Hall University
We are dedicated to fostering a supportive academic atmosphere for all students with disabilities. By announcing during the first class meeting that accommodations are avlable for those needing them, instructors can help normalize this process and ensure inclusivity.
Universal Design of Instruction UDI is at the heart of our approach. This concept challenges us to think broadly about our students' unique abilities, needs, and perspectives rather than designing exclusively for the normative experience. By applying UDI in our teaching practices, we m to empower every student with knowledge and skills necessary for academic success while mntning high standards for all.
Here's how faculty can embrace Universal Design:
Promote an Inclusive Classroom Climate: Encourage diverse viewpoints by demonstrating respect for everyone's contributions. Implement engaging methods that students from different backgrounds and learning styles. It’s essential to foster a welcoming environment where every student feels valued.
Ensure Physical Access, Usability, and Safety: Design instructional spaces that cater to all students’ abilities without compromising safety standards. Arrange your classroom thoughtfully considering physical barriers and the comfort of diverse learners.
Adopt Diverse Teaching Methods: Utilize various teaching techniques including lectures, group work, hands-on activities, digital communications, educational software, fieldwork, etc., ensuring accessibility for everyone. Use clear visual ds that are large, bold, and uncluttered. Provide instructions in multiple formats verbal and written to ensure comprehension.
Provide Accessible Information Resources: Make sure all course materials, notes, and resources are adaptable to different needs. Starting the syllabus early allows students flexibility in accessing and preparing for classwork, including converting materials into alternate formats when necessary.
Assess Student Progress Effectively: Implement diverse assessment methods that accurately measure learning outcomes rather than just adapting to new presentation styles. Provide clear grading rubrics with transparent expectations, assignment descriptions, and deadlines to minimize misunderstandings.
